Introduction & Profiles

I've been drawing since I was little and feel that if I want to improve, I need to get serious and start drawing more. Many artists have sketchblogs, and I decided to start one myself, to get incentive to sketch everyday. One of the things I love about drawing is the fact that you can really see the changes in your style and the improvement a little bit of practice makes! For now, drawing is just a hobby for me, but I think that if I improve enough, perhaps an artistic career will appear on the horizon? Who knows. But hobby or career, it doesn't matter -- I just want to get better.

Each week I will introduce a theme and produce sketches each day of the week involving that theme. I would like to start this week with the human profile, as I just came across a great video by amazing artist Bobby Chiu featuring his "arrow" technique. It's brilliantly simple both in concept and in practice. I'd like to try out this technique in drawing profiles.

Here's my start. It's not much, yet, but the arrow technique really speeds up the process. I like that you can use the arrows while still being able to have fun with shapes and styles to give each profile its own unique character. The head on the upper left is the first one I did and strangely enough I think it looks the best out of the four, maybe because it has more realistic proportions.

To be continued!
